BREAKFAST WITH GIANTS: GIRAFFE MANOR

Giraffes at breakfast

Picture this: You’re sipping your morning coffee, enjoying the peaceful sounds of the African dawn, when suddenly an 18-foot-tall head pokes through your dining room window, looking for breakfast. Welcome to Giraffe Manor, the only place on Earth where endangered Rothschild’s giraffes are your breakfast companions.

A Living Conservation Success Story

Nestled in the tranquil suburb of Karen, just outside Nairobi, Kenya, Giraffe Manor isn’t just a hotel—it’s a testament to what can happen when luxury hospitality meets wildlife conservation. Built in 1932 as a colonial hunting lodge, the property was transformed by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville in 1974, who founded the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) and moved two highly endangered baby Rothschild giraffes to the estate.

Those two original giraffes, Daisy and Marlon, thrived and produced further generations who continue to delight guests from across the globe. What started as a rescue mission has become one of the world’s most successful conservation stories, with the Rothschild giraffe being one of the most endangered populations of giraffe on the planet.

The Ultimate Breakfast Experience

I’ve arranged luxury travel experiences around the world, but nothing—and I mean nothing—compares to breakfast at Giraffe Manor. At 5am, guests wake up to the giraffes coming for their morning feed, with the experience of feeding the giraffes from the balcony being so unique and amazing.

But the real magic happens during breakfast itself. As you sit down to your morning meal, these gentle giants casually stroll up to the dining room windows, poking their massive heads through the openings. There’s a LOT of drooling on phones, head-butting, and playful nipping involved with breakfast. And a LOT of blurry pictures—but trust me, even the blurriest photo from this experience becomes a treasured memory.

Two Manor Houses, One Extraordinary Experience

Guest room

Giraffe Manor’s 12 individually decorated rooms are split between two distinct buildings, each offering its own unique charm and giraffe encounters.

The Historic Manor (Built 1932) The original colonial hunting lodge houses six rooms, including the Karen Blixen Family Suite with two en-suite bedrooms, and five Superior Double Rooms named Betty, Jock, Daisy, Marlon, and Lynn. Because the manor was originally a private family home, all the rooms are completely unique and different. Each room tells a story of the manor’s rich history—in Betty’s room, you’ll find her portrait hanging on the wall in this lovely 32 square-metre south-facing room with a king-sized bed, fireplace, and adjoining balcony where giraffes can be fed. Guests who stay in the Historic Manor will have breakfast with the giraffes in the Historic Manor sunroom.

The Garden Manor Although the two buildings were built 78 years apart, you would never know the difference as much of the Garden Manor was built out of reclaimed materials from houses of a similar era to the Historic Manor. This newer wing features six additional rooms, with special highlights being the Kelly and Helen rooms that offer the opportunity to feed the giraffes from your bedroom window. Guests who stay in the Garden Manor will have breakfast with the giraffes in the Garden Manor dining room. The giraffe experience offered to guests is the same regardless of which section you stay in—both buildings receive equal attention from our gentle giants.

The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful, and the food is excellent. All meals are fantastic—always three courses, creative, delicious—and always very attentive to any food restrictions. But let’s be honest: no meal compares to breakfast with your giraffe companions.

Activities Beyond the Giraffes

While the giraffes are undoubtedly the main attraction, Giraffe Manor offers a variety of activities to fill your days between feedings:

On the Manor Grounds:

  • Painting activities and art sessions
  • Garden games including boules and giant Jenga
  • A large swing from which the giraffes can be fed
  • Puzzles, coloring pages, and board games including a beautiful chess set
  • Peaceful walks through the 140 acres of indigenous forest

The Retreat at Giraffe Manor Located right next door to the main property, The Retreat provides manor house guests with an impressive range of wellness facilities that elevate your stay to new heights:

  • 21-meter infinity pool overlooking the giraffe sanctuary
  • Full spa services with two spacious treatment rooms
  • Sauna, steam room, and hot tub for ultimate relaxation
  • Fully equipped gymnasium with views over the beautiful swimming pool
  • Four spacious day rooms for additional tranquil indoor and outdoor relaxation spaces

All day room bookings at The Retreat currently include a complimentary massage, so you can truly unwind. Given that The Retreat is next door to the main house, you can observe the resident herd of Rothschild giraffes during breakfast or afternoon tea from your day room terrace (depending on which room you choose, as some are closer to the Manor).

The combination of these wellness facilities with the unique giraffe experience creates the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation that defines luxury travel at its finest.

What makes Giraffe Manor truly special is its commitment to conservation. The giraffes at Giraffe Manor are part of a wider conservation effort by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, aimed at increasing the population of this critically endangered species. Through the hotel’s initiatives, guests directly contribute to the protection of giraffes and their habitats.

Giraffe populations have declined by nearly 40% in the past three decades, earning them the nickname “the silent extinction.” Conservation programs work to protect giraffes by safeguarding habitats, supporting local communities, and advancing scientific research. By staying at Giraffe Manor, you’re not just experiencing luxury—you’re participating in active conservation.

Planning Your Visit

Here’s what I always tell my clients: book 12+ months in advance. This bucket-list experience sells out fast, and for good reason. In March 2009, Giraffe Manor was purchased by Mikey and Tanya Carr-Hartley as part of The Safari Collection group of lodges and hotels, ensuring its continued operation as both a luxury hotel and conservation sanctuary.

The best part of your stay won’t involve your room—it will be at breakfast or afternoon tea with some of the most beautiful animals in the world. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary, planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, or simply want to experience something truly extraordinary, Giraffe Manor delivers an experience that money truly can’t buy anywhere else.

Why I Recommend Giraffe Manor

The manor at night

As a luxury travel specialist, I’ve seen properties around the world try to create “unique” experiences. But Giraffe Manor isn’t trying—it simply is unique. There’s literally nowhere else on Earth where you can have breakfast with endangered giraffes in an elegant 1930s manor house while contributing to their conservation.

Every morning at Giraffe Manor, you wake up not just to a luxury hotel experience, but to the privilege of sharing space with these magnificent creatures who have been protected and nurtured on this land for nearly 50 years. It’s luxury travel with purpose, conservation with comfort, and an experience that will change how you see both hospitality and wildlife forever.
